Urgent ‘do not eat’ alerts for Lidl shoppers

Lidl recently put out an important notice urging customers to return a specific product.

The supermarket chain is recalling XXL Ocean Sea Cooked and Peeled Large Prawns because they contain sulphites.

Product details

  • Pack size: 1kg
  • Best-before date: January 2025

Sulphites are not mentioned on the label, which means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide, or sulphites.

Lidl said: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to sulphur dioxide, we advise you not to eat it.

“Customers are asked to return this product to the nearest store where a full refund will be given.”

Lidl added: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your cooperation.”

Allergy UK said sulphites are preservatives that may affect up to 13 percent of people who have asthma.

Sulphites work by releasing the gas sulphur dioxide, which can be an irritant for some people.

The charity elaborated: “Sulphites can cause allergy-like symptoms in people with underlying asthma and allergic rhinitis.”

Most commonly, a person who is reacting to sulphites will be wheezing, have a tight chest and cough.

Asthmatics suffering from a reaction to sulphites are encouraged to use their inhaler.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued the alert on November 30, 2023, which will continue to be in place for a while.
