Sainsbury’s is the latest major supermarket to recall a product due to the possible presence of mould.
The supermarket informed customers: “Sainsbury’s is recalling St Pierre 6 Pains Au Chocolat with a Best Before date of 17/09/2023, 25/09/2023 and 01/10/2023.
“This is a precaution as St Pierre have identified a potential quality issue with mould contamination.
“This product is suitable for freezing so any customers who have this product in their freezers should check the best before date.
“As a precautionary measure we are asking all customers who have bought this product with the above use-by date only, not to consume it, and to return it to their nearest store where they will receive a full refund (no receipt is necessary).”

Sainsbury’s apologised for any inconvenience caused, and urged customers seeking further information to contact [email protected].
Sainsbury’s continued: “No other St Pierre products are affected by this issue. We are sorry about this and apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to thank you in advance for your understanding and co-operation.”
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) echoed the advice. Its risk statement read: “The possible presence of mould may make the product unsafe to eat.”
The FSA advised: “If you have bought any of the above product do not eat it. Instead, return it to your nearest store for a full refund. You do not need your receipt. If you would like any further information please contact: [email protected].”

While food recalls are not common, they must be taken seriously when they do.
The FSA explained: “If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).
“The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.
“In some cases, a ‘Food Alert for Action’ is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.”
