Breakfast has been called the most important meal of the day, and for good reason, according to a nutritionist.
From eggs on toast to smoked salmon and avocado, the options are endless when it comes to choosing a nutritious yet delicious first course of the day.
However, it appears that food may not be the top priority for some Britons with more than one in five admitting they don’t always eat breakfast, according to new research from Betway.
Furthermore, seven percent of respondents confessed to never eating breakfast.
Qualified nutritionist Kristen Stavridis said that despite most people being aware of how “important” breakfast is, they don’t prioritise it.

Kristen said: “It might be a case of waking up earlier so you have time to make a healthy breakfast or eat breakfast.
“A lot of clients come to me and say they don’t have breakfast because they don’t have time or don’t feel hungry in the morning.
“It’s just a case of changing out some of their habits, like what time they wake up or their caffeine intake.”
One reason some people don’t eat breakfast is because they’re intermittent fasting.

Kristen said that while there are many benefits of intermittent fasting such as lowering inflammation, she doesn’t recommend it for women.
She explained: “Specifically for women, it’s actually not something I recommend.
“It’s better for your hormones and fertility to have a protein-rich breakfast in the morning.
“There are benefits to fasting in terms of gut microbiome and healing, but overall, it’s better for hormones, energy levels, and the menstrual cycle to have a good quality breakfast.
“It has been shown in men, yes there are many benefits to intermittent fasting, but overall it’s better for your body and people tend to live longer when you prioritise a healthy breakfast in the morning.
“People fast for health benefits, but essentially, if you’re skipping breakfast, it’s not really great for your blood sugar levels and hormones.”
So what should you eat for breakfast? Kristen recommends a meal high in protein like scrambled or fried eggs with a piece of brown toast and avocado.
The meal contains protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats which is the perfect start to the day.
