You can inject a bit of that regal feeling into your dishes this festive season as a former palace chef for the Royal Family has revealed what the household eats for Christmas every year.

Darren McGrady was a chef for the Royal Family from 1982 to 1998 and revealed to Marie Claire that, over the course of those 16 years, the Christmas menu hardly changed.

Ever the creatures of habit, the royals apparently have a set routine for the Christmas Day feasting, and thanks to McGrady, you can follow along at home this year.

Breakfast

After waking up on Christmas morning at the Sandringham country estate, the Royal Family typically enjoy a big cooked breakfast, including all the staples: eggs, bacon, and sausages. Then they’ll head off to church.

Lunch

After returning from church, the Royal Family will start feasting on a very fancy-sounding shrimp or lobster salad.

Not stopping there, they then move on to the classic turkey Christmas lunch with all the trimming – parsnips, brussel sprouts with onion and bacon, and carrots.

Finishing lunch with something sweet, they tuck into their now-famous Christmas pudding with brandy butter. Their Christmas pudding is packed with dried fruit, suet, spices, butter, and alcohol – beer, dark rum and brandy.

Dinner

After the King’s speech at 3pm, the Royal Family all enjoy afternoon tea with fruit cake, but this is before their actual dinner.

Dinner is a full-on feast with a buffet spread of up to 20 different dishes including ham, seafood, and gingerbread.

It’s a miracle they’re able to move at all after eating all that food!
