KJ Beer Can Chicken


  1. 1 whole chicken
  2. 2 sticks butter, melted
  3. 1 tsp rub
  4. 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  5. 1/4 tsp onion powder
  6. 1 bunch fresh thyme
  7. 6 gloves of garlic, mashed
  8. Additional BBQ rub
  9. Beer


  1. Set Kamado Joe for 350. Place heat deflectors on accessory rack in low position. Place tin foil drop tray in the center. Place grates in top position.

  2. Melt the butter on the stove top and add onion powder, garlic powder and rub.

  3. Inject the mixture between the chicken skin and meat. Apply additional rub to outside of chicken.

  4. In the beer can stand add garlic cloves, thyme and beer. Place on Kamado Joe to heat for 15 minutes.

  5. Place chicken on stand and check around 1 hour 15 minutes. Baste chicken with leftover butter mixture. Cook until 165F. Let rest for 10-15 minutes.
