Losing weight can be an uphill battle for many, with results taking sometimes months to show. When eating in a calorie deficit, the body is forced to burn fat, which causes weight loss. However, eating less than your maintenance calories can lead to hunger.

Dr Michael Mosley regularly shares his weight loss advice online as well as on his television shows.

He is known for popularising the 5:2 intermittent fasting plan, which is where slimmers eat about 25 percent of their recommended calorie needs on two scheduled days each week and then eat normally for the other five days.

There are also other forms of intermittent fasting including the 16/8 method and the alternate-day fasting.

Slimmers may feel hungry when following a diet plan but Dr Mosley recommends keeping a healthy snack nearby.

He said: “The best way to prevent hunger when you’re intermittent fasting is to use something like a meal replacement shake.

“Follow the Fast 800 programme, because it has been very carefully calibrated to ensure it gives you the maximum nutrients and the maximum amount of fibre and protein.

“The reason people get hungry is because they’ve eaten something very high in sugar or carbs, so they get a massive rise in the blood sugar levels and then they crash and then they get hungry.

“I find if you’re eating something which has plenty of fibre in it and plenty of nutrients, I really don’t get hungry at all.

“And if I’m going to snack, I would go for a small handful of nuts or something like that…it really takes the edge away.

“It is important to have decent amounts of protein, by which I mean around 50g a day.”

Having a snack nearby can work when following any diet, including those who chose to eat in a calorie deficit.

This is because it reduces the risk of being tempted by other snacks, especially unhealthy ones.

How else can you feel less hungry when wanting to lose weight?

Dr Mosley added: “It’s really important to have a decent amount of protein, which is 50-70g a day.

“You can mainly get protein from meat or from fish, and you can also get it from legumes, but you have to eat rather more, which is why following the Fast 800 on a vegetarian diet is more challenging.

“We do have meal replacement shakes which are very rich in protein, and we’re also aiming to produce protein boosters, to help people who might otherwise struggle with it.

“The reason for protein is you need it for your muscles. You need it for all sorts of essential metabolic processes.

“And also because when you consume it, it’s digested slower by the body so you don’t get the same sort of peaks.”

As well as eating healthy, exercise can also help aid in the weight loss journey.

Hitting 10,000 steps a day is a target for some, with walking being one of the most underrated forms of exercise.

It can help increase a slimmer’s metabolic rate as well as help to create a larger calorie deficit.
