As the UK waves goodbye to summer and enters the autumn months, people may have started to notice that some of their favourite fruits and vegetables just aren’t hitting the spot anymore. A lot of fresh food including the majority of fruit and veg is seasonal, so it’s important for people to find other superfoods to add to their diets in order to continue their weight loss journey successfully.

In order to give people some inspiration, MuscleFood’s nutritional experts alongside head chef, Tom Bennet, identified some of the top seasonal superfoods and how people should add them to their diets to maintain a balanced, healthy lifestyle this autumn.


Beetroot is available all year round in the supermarkets but it usually comes into season in October.

It is a great addition to everyone’s weight loss diet as they are high in fibre and low in calories.

Their high fibre content makes them great for promoting the growth of good bacteria in the gut which is essential for a healthy digestive system, so can aid pound shedding when added to a healthy diet.

It is also rich in folate which works to help your cells grow and function. One cup of beets contains 3.8g of fibre and only 59 calories.

Tom explained: “Beetroot is a great addition to any salad, especially when paired with either feta or goat’s cheese.”

And this combination can work wonders for weight loss as the fatty acids in goat cheese are metabolised faster than in cow’s cheese so the body feels full faster, according to WebMD.

In a recent study, researchers found evidence that opting for goat cheese over cow helps people feel less hungry and eat less overall, which is an important factor in weight loss.

Tom added: “As we’re moving into cooler months, roasted beetroot may be more suitable.

“They also pair great with sweet potatoes with your preferred side of protein, such as salmon or chicken.”


This fruit starts coming into season in September and Tom revealed they are “a great way of satisfying sweet cravings” whilst also providing people with a number of essential vitamins and minerals.

Figs are packed full of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron and many more, and are also a great source of both calcium and potassium, which can work to improve bone density.

They are fairly low in calories and high in fibre, which makes them very filling.

Tom revealed incorporating high-fibre foods like figs into a balanced diet may help people stay full between meals and avoid eating too much, which may promote weight loss.


Yet another weight loss-friendly food, Tom revealed kale is full of goodness that can help people shed pounds successfully.

The superfood that comes back into season this month is very low in calories and still provides significant bulk that should help keep people full.

Tom explained it has several properties that aid other important bodily functions.

“It’s a great antioxidant that contains calcium, vitamin C, K, and Iron,” he said.

“The richness of beta-carotene and vitamin A in Kale helps with the necessary growth of all body tissues, meaning the consumption of Kale can help contribute to the health of your skin and hair.”

What’s more, people can create plenty of recipes with it.

The chef suggested trying out kale chips, which are “really popular” and “really simple to make”.


Pumpkin has long been associated widely with the Autumn months as a staple of Halloween, which is fast approaching.

And the orange fruit has been linked to helping people lose weight and cut belly fat naturally.

Nutritionally, pumpkins are very rich and are devoid of cholesterol, sodium and fats, which is why experts suggest adding them into weight loss diets.

Also, people can also consume more of it than other carb sources as it has fewer calories than the likes of rice and potatoes.

Tom explained pumpkin is very versatile and can be easily added into a diet.

“Pumpkin can be used for both savoury and sweet dishes,” he said. “It makes the perfect addition to an autumnal pie, or great in a hearty soup on those cooler days.”
