While dieting the urge to snack can sometimes be a little too much. So what can people do when the cravings hit?

While there are plenty of ways to get around snacking, Dr Michael Mosley offered up a very low-calorie treat that can be enjoyed while following his Fast 800 diet plan.

The Fast 800 diet involves cutting a person’s calorie intake to 800 a day for the first couple of weeks of the diet.

They then progress to the 5:2 stage, where they’re only required to eat this number of calories for two days a week while following a sensible diet on the other five days.

Healthy snacks can contribute important nutrients to the diet, and snacking on low-calorie foods can reduce a person’s overall calorie intake.

Dr Mosley said: “Nuts are a great source of protein and fibre.

“However, I would advise avoiding salted to sweetened nuts, which can be moreish.

“Two almonds equals 28 calories while seven walnut halves equal 90 calories.”

One very low-calorie snack he recommends on the Fast 800 diet is almond and raisin chocolate pennies.

He explained: “It’s worth finding chocolate with 85 percent cocoa solids for these treats.

“They are full of polyphenols that your gut bugs will love, the almonds add some protein and crunch and the raisins bring sweetness and extra fibre, too.”

100g plain dark chocolate (around 85 percent)

25g toasted flaked almonds (see tip on page 34)

25g raisins


Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper.

Break 100g plain dark chocolate into squares and place in a bowl over a pan of gently simmering water.

Make sure the base of the bowl isn’t touching the water.

Leave to melt for five mins, stirring occasionally. Alternatively, microwave on high for one to two minutes, or until almost fully melted, then stir.

Carefully remove the hot bowl and, using a teaspoon, pour 20 individual spoonfuls of the melted chocolate onto the tray, well spaced.

Scatter 25g flaked almonds and 25g raisins on top of the melted chocolate. Leave to set for two to three hours.

Place in an airtight container and store for up to a week in a cool place.

Dr Mosley recommended “enjoying a larger portion” for those people on the non-fasting days of the diet.

And he offered some handy tips for those following the recipe to make the light snack even more delicious.

“If you are toasting your own almonds, leave to cool before sprinkling over the melted chocolate,” he advised.

“You can also use dried cranberries instead of raisins if you prefer, but do try to track down varieties containing less sugar.”

He added: “If you think you might be tempted to eat too many of the chocolate pennies, make just half a batch at a time.”
