Michael McIntyre is due to appear on screen this evening hosting his new game show The Wheel on BBC One. The Star is known to have struggled with his weight over the years, having worked hard to slim down and ultimately improve his health.

In fact, in the last few years, it is reported that the comedian has shed a total of 28 pounds.

However, he is not a fan of fad diets. Instead, he opts for good old fashioned healthy eating and exercise.

Though he has admitted to being a fan of a beverage every now and then, McIntyre is believed to have cut down on how much alcohol he was consuming.

Alcohol is high in both sugar and carbohydrates, and can be detrimental to a diet due to being filed wit “empty calories”.

This means that although alcoholic drinks, such as beer and cocktails, are high in calories, they offer little energy.

The funny many also reduced the number of carbohydrates he was consuming in his diet.

Appearing on the Jonathan Ross show, the comedian revealed an insight into one incident which inspired him to begin his journey towards a healthier lifestyle.

“I had an incident last year and I thought I should try and lose weight. In an airport, the E gates,” he said.

“I went in there in France and it wouldn’t let me out. It said on the screen, this was a low point, it said ‘only one person’.

“So I got to the stage that I was the size of two Frenchmen. I had to go round the other way. It was convinced I was two people.

“I was inspired then to lose weight.”

Despite this, he admitted that lockdown has been a difficult time.

“I put a little bit of weight on [in lockdown],” he said.

However, he seemed keen to get back into an active and healthy lifestyle in the new year.

He added: “A lot of deliveries, a lot of weight gain… New Year it’s all about Joe Wicks getting fit again – we’ve done all of this!”

Though he did not explain how he was going to approach his latest chapter of fitness, the TV host has previously used a healthy meal delivery service to help enhance his diet.

It is reported that he spent around £60 a day to utilise The Pure Package service.

Meals include healthy fats and protein-packed food such as avocado and cottage cheese.

Despite his health-conscious approach to weight loss, however, the comedian admits he has taken things to the extreme in moments of desperation.

In fact, McIntyre says he once lost a stone in just six days after visiting a Mayr clinic in Austria.

Speaking on Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast he said he lived on just soup and crackers.

However, this kind of crash diet is not recommended by the NHS.

Instead, they recommend aiming for a weight loss of between one and two pounds a week, while eating a healthy diet and incorporating plenty of exercise.

According to the NHS website the “keys to success” include making “realistic changes to your diet and physical activity that can become a part of your regular routine”.

The experts add: “The best way to lose weight is to make long-term changes to diet and physical activity that result in a steady rate of weight loss –

aim to lose weight at around 0.5kg to 1kg a week (1 pound to 2 pounds), until you achieve a healthy body mass index.”

Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel is on BBC One this evening a 8:30pm.
