Fern Britton will appear this evening on ITV’s Tipping Point: Lucky Stars at 5pm, alongside fellow celebrities Iain Stirling and Mark-Francis Vandelli. Viewers will be reminded of Fern’s recent weight loss transformation. What changes did Fern make to her diet and lifestyle to lose weight, as well as to maintain her ideal weight?

Fern has opened up about her transformation in the past, unveiling that she dropped from a size 22 to a size 12.

During this process, the presenter lost a whopping five stone.

To do this, Fern reduced her carbohydrate intake and ate a healthier diet.

She also credited a gastric band for her weight loss journey.

The 64-year-old decided to undergo a gastric band operation in 2006.

Gastric bands are fitted for those who want to lose a considerable amount of weight in a relatively easy way.

Placed around the stomach, gastric bands help slimmers lose weight by allowing them to feel fuller with fewer calories each day.

As well as wearing the gastro band, Fern ate fewer carbohydrates and less microwave meals.

She ate more home cooked meals, adding plenty of fruit and vegetables to her diet.

Speaking to the Daily Mail about her weight loss journey, Fern said: “I needed to get healthy.

“I wasn’t unhappy the way I was; I was unhealthy.

“I’d been recovering from having children, having a divorce, all those emotional things.”

Another motivator was the fact that Fern’s knee joins started to hurt, and her cholesterol was also high.

The host’s former husband, Phil Vickery, said at the time: “Fern has cut right back on carbohydrates and eats a really healthy diet now with loads of vegetables and fruit.

“She likes my cooking.

“Family meals are old-fashioned favourites, like cottage pie or chicken with lots of veg and salad.”

Reducing the number of carbohydrates she consumed massively helped Fern to lose weight.

Low-carb diets have been proven to help slimmers eat less throughout the day, leading to a calorie deficit.

This means burning more calories than you consume throughout the day.

According to Healthline, “cutting carbs is one of the simplest and most effective ways to lose weight”.

The website added: “Studies illustrate that people on low-carb diets lose more weight, faster, than those on low-fat diets – even when the latter are actively restricting calories.

“This is because low-carb diets act to rid excess water from your body, lowering insulin levels and leading to rapid weight loss in the first week or two.”
