Few foods signify summer quite like ice cream and a hot dog slathered in ketchup and mustard (it’s the right way to do it; fight me). Well, what if I told you that an approximation of those two summertime staples was somehow available in a single package that approximately zero people were clamoring for?
Believe it, folks: mustard-flavored ice cream is upon us. Unsurprisingly, the brain trust behind this unholy alliance involves French’s, the condiment company known for their bright-yellow mustard. Apparently, August 3rd is “National Mustard Day,” so this is a timely opportunity for them to be “putting an unexpected twist on [a] beloved classic,” according to a press release.
To make this morbidly fascinating treat, the mustard company teamed up with ice cream brand Coolhaus, who took on the challenge. “As lovers of sweet-meets-savory, pure ingredients and unique creations, we are incredibly excited to be collaborating with French's Mustard in creating this one-of-a-kind product," Coolhaus CEO and founder Natasha Case said.
From the sound of it, mustard ice cream pairs a cake batter base with that strange savory flavor we know and love. We haven’t gotten our hands on it (yet), but evidence from multiple taste tests suggests that the combination isn’t quite as disgusting as you’d think. It sounds like the mustard is present without being disgustingly overwhelming. Some who sampled even seemed disappointing that the mustard flavor wasn’t stronger. That’s probably more than can be said for mayo ice cream.

If you want to see what all the fuss is about for yourself and happen to live in the New York or LA areas, you can get your hands on some mustard ice cream in the near future. It’ll be available at various spots in Manhattan and Brooklyn on August 1st and 2nd, before moving out to the Hamptons on the 3rd. Meanwhile, Angelenos can visit Coolhaus’ Culver City location to grab some on August 2nd to 4th and 9th to 11th.
Just don’t hold your breath for ketchup ice cream any time soon.
