Costa Coffee confirms all drive-thrus will reopen by the end of next week

Costa Coffee has given coffee lovers the good news they were waiting for as it confirms that all of its drive thru stories will be reopening by the end of the month. The coffee chain had to close in March to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. However, in recent weeks the company has started a phased reopening of some of its stores with great success.

Costa Coffee confirmed the news on social media and on its website, stating that all drive-thru locations will be open by the end of next week.

The company reopened another 75 lanes on Thursday, and announced that the remaining 58 will reopen on May 28.

However, in a statement on the website, CEO Jill McDonald added that a small number of drive-thrus operated by Roadchef would be closed until June.

As the coffee chain remains cautious about opening up its high street stores while the lockdown continues, the move will be good news for drivers who are missing their caffeine fix.

Sharing the update on the website, McDonald wrote: “All of us here at Costa Coffee hope you and your family and friends are well and looking forward to another long-weekend.

“Over the past four weeks, in line with Government guidelines, we are pleased to have successfully re-opened over 70 Costa Coffee stores.

“To keep our store teams and customers safe, we’ve made a lot of changes to how we serve our coffee, introducing social distancing and enhancing our hygiene procedures.

“Customers are telling us that they feel safe when visiting and are delighted that we’re open.”

As well as getting all of its drive-thrus open again this month, the chain will have 18 takeaway stores that continue to stay open in May.

These stores allow customers to go into the stores and collect their drinks in person.

However, Costa also has 14 stores open for delivery, where coffee fans can order their favourites from home and have it delivered with Uber Eats.

Replying to a customer on social media, the team said they think they’ll have more locations open for takeaway in “early June”.

The popular cafe chain initially trialled opening just two restaurants and two drive-thrus, to test its new way of working.

The successful trial phase led to the reopening of drive-thrus and delivery-only locations at the start of May.

The most recent phase has been to get the takeaway stores up and running, where customers are permitted to go into the cafes to pick up their order.

However, there are plenty of new rules in place to protect staff and customers from the virus.

Only one customer is allowed at the counter at a time, and reusable cups will not be accepted due to strict hygiene measures.

The chain is only accepting contactless payments using cards and smartphones rather than cash.

The Costa Coffee menu will also be a little different as the chain offers a more limited selection in order to keep its staff safe.

The CEO added: “A huge thank you to those team members working, helping us to safely re-open. We look forward to welcoming customers safely back into our stores.”
